Khopra Danda and Khayer Lake Trek are newly opened trekking routes in Annapurna Nepal. The less crowded trek route in Annapurna, the trek is getting popularity in lesser time. The route is popular to its best views of mountains including Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna (I, II, III, and south), Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre, Lamjung Himal and Nilgiri views and more.

 

The Khopra Danda Trek is a trip around North Mid-West Himalaya within Annapurna / Dhaulagiri range. The region is populated by Gurung and Poon-Magar tribes with Hindu and Buddhist religion with interesting old traditional life with colorful culture. The highest elevation of the trek is Kopra Ridge 3,870 m / 12,771 ft and Khayer Lake at 4,620 m /15,246 ft. It is a perfect trek for people interested in wilderness trekking, away from mainstream trekking trails. The Kopra Ridge and Khayer Lake Trekking take you to the pristine wilderness on off the beaten tracks. Exploration of the hidden areas and walk to the holy glacial lake of Khayer with an awesome panorama of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range of mountains is very interesting.

 

The trek starts from the city of lakes Pokhara. It then goes to Ghorepani via Ulleri for the best views. Ghorepani onward leaving the main busy trail towards wilderness and tranquil areas of Annapurna past remote rural farm villages with a climb up to Kopra Ridge, here with time to enjoy close views of Dhaulagiri, Vara-Shikar and Annapurna peaks and walk to holy Khair Lake.

Upon your arrival at Kathmandu International airport; you will be welcomed by one of our representatives with the traditional Nepali garland. After the heartiest welcome, you will be transferred to the hotel in Thamel. In the free time you can take a good rest in your hotel.

The Kathmandu valley sightseeing is dedicated to exploring the four of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites of Kathmandu. Those four sites you will be visiting are; Soyambhunath Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa and Kathmandu Durbar Square. After the sightseeing, you can then go and pack your trekking equipment. If you need any the equipment then it can be either rented or can be bought in Thamel.

After breakfast in the hotel, you will be picked up by your guide to start your journey to Pokhara. The bus travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara will be of six to seven hours journey. There will be several breaks for the toilet and a lunch break will be taken as well. Upon your arrival in Pokhara, you will be transferred to the hotel. In the free time, you can walk around the famous Phewa Lake and also collect the super views of mountains and the sunset from the Phewa lakeside.

You will be picked up from the Pokhara hotel after breakfast. You will then take a scenic drive to Nayapul via the famous mountain viewpoint of Sarangkot. Upon your arrival at Nayapul; your guide will do the permits check-in at the check post. From there; you will start your Ghorepani Poon Hill trek on foot. The route from Nayapul to Ulleri is mostly gradual uphill via small villages of Hile, Sudhame, and Tikhedhunga. There is a steep stoned paved uphill just before Ulleri. From Ulleri, you can see a wonderful view of Annapurna South (7,219m.) on a clear day.

Get the great sunrise view at Annapurna South before breakfast. Then grab the superbly prepared breakfast. And the begin the trekking to Ghorepani. The route from Ulleri to Ghorepani goes through the dense rhododendron forest and with some beautiful waterfalls along the way. Do the permit check-in at Lower Ghorepani again before hiking twenty minutes more to get Ghorepani. At Ghorepani, you can enjoy the superb views of Annapurna South and the Dhaulagiri range. The sunset also looks fantastic from Ghorepani.

Early morning before breakfast, hike up for an hour on top scenic Poon Hill at above 3,210 m high, from Poon Hill, catch striking sunrise views over the panorama of mountains Mt. Dhaulagiri-Tukuche-Nilgiris-Annapurna Fang (Vara Shikar) Annapurna range of peaks with majestic Machhapuchare Himal Fish Tail the unclimbed and virgin peaks of Himalaya. The view includes Mt. Manaslu with Lamjung extending towards Ganesh Himal due to east horizon, after a marvelous photo session head back to Ghorepani for breakfast and carries on down-hill to Chitre after a short distance walk. After Chitre our route branch off from the main trail route to Sauta for overnight stop leaves behind the main trekking trails to off the beaten tracks.

From here onwards on off the beaten track past rural farm villages, as walk contour into rhododendron and bamboo forest, following the animal trail on route Kopra ridge, after a pleasant morning walk. Afternoon walk leads to slow climb uphill through local domestic cattle grazing pastures at Chistibung for an overnight stop. Chistibung a small settlement, with some Tea-Houses serving as the lodge for seldom visitor on this beautiful wilderness within forested areas of tall rhododendron trees.

To gain the ridge, facing a steady climb and then soon leaving behind tree-lines with chances of spotting some wild-life like Himalayan Thar and Danphe (Impeyan / Lophorous Pheasant National Bird of Nepal) is a distinct possibility. Getting up the = ridge, rewarded with fantastic views of Annapurna South and of Vara Shikar (Annapurna Fang), half of the walk involves the gradual ascent on a good path to Kopra Ridge for an overnight stop, this will be our one of the highest spot of the adventure.

Herewith a free day to explore around this pristine wilderness where our day hike takes you to holy lakes at Kaire 4,620 m, a long and demanding day. Khayer Lake fed on the glacier of Annapurna and Vara-Shikar peaks also called Pautarko Kair, which is the site of 'Badau Purnima' the festival held annually in August and September. Villagers from surrounding areas converge here to offer prayers to Lord Shiva, bathe in an icy pond, as well as sacrifice sheep and goats. For those wishing an easier option, walk high on a ridge for fantastic views. Dhaulagiri I (8,167m) and its satellite peaks that dominates western skyline includes Annapurna I (8,091m), Fang or Vara Shikhar (7,647m), Annapurna South (7,237m) and the Nilgiris (7,061m) to the east separated from Dhaulagiri range with drop of 6,000-m, forming world deepest gorge of Kali Gandaki River narrow valley. After a wonderful time at Khair Lake and on the highest point of the adventure with awesome views of peaks head back to Kopra for last overnight in this complete wilderness.

From Kopra Ridge, walk descend bearing east through small grazing pastures amidst scrub rhododendron. The area is only visited in the monsoon by villagers from Sauta who with their sheep, goats, and buffalo occupy the small huts and shelters that we frequently pass along the way. After downhill walks trails climbs gradually rest of the day heading to a small notch that leads to the watershed of Modi Khola valley. There is no proper campsite but the best option would be to camp at Dobato, a small clearing on a ridge with great views of Annapurna South and Mt. Machhapuchare Himal (6,993m) the famous fish-tail peaks.

On leaving serene and off the beaten trail, morning walk leads to descend through forests of rhododendron, oak, and magnolia and then reaching on the main trail at Tadapani small the settlement with a number of the lodge with views of Annapurna. After Tadapani on a pleasant trail to reach at Ghandruk one of the largest villages of the region populated by Gurung tribes, where menfolk have a long history serving as Gorkha soldiers in British and India regiments. Herewith time to visit its local small Gurung museum with views of snow-clad peaks.

Wake up with the wonderful mountain views. Then go and grab your delicious breakfast. The trek then starts descending towards Nayapul through Syauli Bazar via the Modi river bank. At Nayapul, your guide will do the final check out. Then catch your pre-arranged returning drive to Pokhara. Upon your arrival in Pokhara; you can either take a good rest in the hotel or can go around the beautiful city. For dinner; there are many good restaurants near the hotel. You can choose any of them for your preferred food.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Pokhara tourist bus station. The journey from Pokhara to Kathmandu will be of six to seven hours a bus drive. There will be several toilet breaks and a lunch break. Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to the hotel. Later, you can do the last-minute shopping in Thamel.
