Overview of Everest Gokyo Lake Treks

 

Everest via Gokyo lakes Trekking an outstanding scenic and cultural walk visiting high valleys of Khumbu, explore its traditional villages and interesting monasteries with an opportunity to witness incredible age-old colorful custom and culture of Sherpa people. Adventure to Everest & Gokyo Lakes trekking, begins with sweeping flight to Lukla, a popular destination provides fascinating contrast to high mountains-capes as the plane approach closer to land at Lukla airstrip. From Lukla, starting our wonderful trek slowly to Phakding and Monjo villages and entering into Sagarmatha National Park (Sagarmatha in Nepali for Everest) listed as World Heritage Sites enriched with exotic flora and fauna which you might spot some rare and endangered wild-life like elusive snow leopard and herds of mountain goats the Himalayan Thar.

 


Following scenic and cultural route to reach at Sherpa capital Namche Bazaar an interesting and large town, where colorful and busy Saturday Market takes place once a week. Here with time for rest and acclimatization then heading towards an elusive quiet trail to reach at beautiful Gokyo valley. Gokyo Lake and its valley one of the most picturesque and scenic areas of Himalaya located amidst mountains and crystal clear lakes considered as holy for both Hindu and Buddhist religions.

 


At Gokyo climb up to Gokyo-Ri at above 5,357m with spectacular panorama of high mountains capturing world’s four 8,000 meters from Everest, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu with 5th highest Mt. Makalu includes series of lesser peaks with stunning sunrise views.After a glorious moment heading back to Lukla taking an alternative exciting route visiting interesting villages of Pangboche and Thyangboche Monastery with super views of peaks within beautiful alpine woodland of tall rhododendron and pines trees.

 


Tour of its interesting monastery where great colorful religious Mani-Rimdu is held every year which falls in the month of October, and then downhill to Namche Bazaar and beyond to reach at Lukla for the scenic short flight to Kathmandu to conclude our overwhelming adventure on Everest and Gokyo lakes Trekking.

On arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuwan International Airport received by our staff and then transfer to your Hotel, our guide will brief on Hotel, Kathmandu, trekking programs, do's and don'ts and other related information.

After your first night in Kathmandu, morning with half-day guided sightseeing tour in and around Kathmandu at places of interest, Kathmandu valley and the city steeped with historical monuments listed as World Heritage Sites with afternoon time for trek preparation.

Early morning transfer to Kathmandu domestic Airport and then board in a smaller aircraft (twin otter or Dornier) for scenic flight to Lukla. At Lukla received by our trekking guides with porters to carry your bigger bags with time to explore around, our first day walk starts with gradual downhill and then with few ups with view of Kusum-Kangru 6,369m.
As walk continues crossing short suspension bridge with short climb brings to reach Phakding village for overnight stop located near Dudh-Kosi River.

From Phakding on crossing bridge over Dudh-Kosi, morning walk with some short uphill and downhill and re-crossing the same river again with magnificent view of Thamserku 6,608m.After few hours of walks reaching at Monjo village and then walk to the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park, (Sagarmatha for Everest in Nepali while Sherpa calls Chomolungma of Tibetan origin, both names means ‘Great-Mother’)

From the Park gate short descend Jorsalle village, last village before Namche Bazaar is reached, walk leads on river bank within green forested areas of pines-oaks and rhododendron tree.

On reaching the last high bridge where walk leads on a wide winding uphill trail all the way to Namche Bazaar, with magnificent view of Kwangde, Kusum Kangru, Mt. Everest- Nuptse , Lhotse peaks on walk uphill.Namche Bazaar with excellent hotels and lodge situated in a U shaped bowl a major village / town of Khumbu region where colorful and busy Saturday Market is held every week.

Namche an ideal place for rest day for acclimatization and short hike, suggested activities walk to Sagarmatha National Park Headquarter, a magnificent spot perched on top Namche Bazaar with breathtaking view of surrounding high peaks with Mt. Everest and Ama-Dablam visit the park museum for wide information history of Himalayas, geographic, culture, mountaineering as well information on flora and fauna of the region, afternoon at free at leisure explore Namche Bazaar full of shops and stores.

With pleasant overnight at Namche Bazaar morning on gradual winding trails with views of Everest, Ama-Dablam for few hours and then a steep climb uphill to Mong danda, a small place on a ridge top facing magnificent views of peaks, from here downhill to Dudh Kosi River near Phunki Thanka for lunch within the shade of tall alpine woodland, and the continue walk for another few hours with a climb into serene alpine forest filled with rhododendron-oaks-magnolia-pines-juniper and fir tree lines with constant view of peaks, finally walk ends on a small place at Dole for overnight stop.

From Dole morning walk starts with a climb as the rhododendron forest declines for smaller rhododendron and juniper bushes, where walk proceeds to higher altitude, as the route leads on a high ridge and then on level path for an hour reaching at Lhabarma Kharka and Luza at 4,390m; as the walk continues skirting a ridge line with super views of Cho-Oyu world 6th highest peak at 8,201 m high, from here descend to Machherma a small settlement with few good lodges, at Machherma for lunch and overnight stop with ample time for short walks or just relax and enjoy the views.

After Machherma with touch of altitude, today another short walk to reach at Gokyo Lake as our morning walk leads on nice gradual path to Pangka, a small flat area and then descend to follow a glacial river one of the tributaries of Dudh Kosi, the source flows from Ngozumba Glacier with Mt. Cho-Oyu and adjoining peaks. 

Morning leads to a climb reaching first lakes of Gokyo and then past the 2nd lakes to reach towards 3rd lake known as Dudh Pokhari, popularly known as Gokyo Lake, around Gokyo in early days was a yak herder summer settlement in the shade of Mt. Cho Oyo and Gyachung Kang reflecting on its emerald colored Gokyo Lake.
On reaching at Gokyo, transfer into a nice and cozy lodge for overnight stop with lunch above the lake overlooking superb views of surrounding landscapes and mountains.

Early morning hike and climb to scenic Gokyo Ri for stunning sunrise views over chain of world highest mountains, as the climbs take you on top Gokyo Ri at 5,357 m where you will be rewarded with glorious panorama of Mt. Everest-Lhotse-Makalu with Mt. Cho-Oyu includes series of peaks and of Gokyo lake with Ngozumba Glacier down below.
With fantastic views and enjoyable moments head back to Gokyo for breakfast and lunch with the rest of the day free to marvel the beauty of Gokyo Lake and its surrounding magnificent landscapes and mountains.

Today another short and scenic walk on wide and better trails downhill to reach at Phortse village a quaint and peaceful village, where trekkers often visit this area which off the beaten tracks away from the main flow of trekkers.
Herewith plenty of time to explore these peaceful areas and village or just relax and catch up with your daily dairy.

From here onward on long descend with few climbs as the trail leads towards Pangboche village and then to the bridge, after the bridge back into greens and tree lines as the route climbs up to Tengboche Monastery, a great and super spot with marvelous views of snow-clad peaks that surround this small plateau within green forested areas. At Tengboche visit, the famous monastery of great interest observes monks and priests on deep chanting and prayer that fills the ambiance of this beautiful and scenic spot.

Tengboche Monastery holds a great event known as Mani Rimdu every year in the month of October where Lama-monks adorned with colorful dress and masks dance wading evil spirits, an interesting festival to observe.

From this scenic place morning walk on downhill to Phunki Tenga on crossing a wooden bridge climb uphill to Lobesa and Sanasa small villages with gradual winding path to Kyanjinma.A beautiful spot with few lodges facing Everest-Ama-Dablam and Tharmarserku peaks, here chance of spotting some wild life like Thar, Musk deer and the colorful Danphe (Impeyan pheasant and national bird of Nepal).

After a wonderful time on scenic and quiet spot within woodland walk descends towards Namche Bazaar, here having a short rest and then continue walk downhill towards Monjo for overnight stop.

Retrace the journey back to Phakding on winding downhill track following Dudh Koshi River down streams with few short ups in between, from Phakding onward a pleasant walk with last short climb to Lukla for last overnight stop.

Flight time to Kathmandu, schedule in the morning normally, sometimes flight can get delayed due to bad weather and other reason, depending upon flight time board in a small aircraft for the super flight back to Kathmandu.
